Mark says 'Whilst I was working on the New Left this summer, I came across a postcard from David Cornwell to Raphael Samuel in the latter's archive at the Bishopsgate Institute. It was long known that Cornwell, otherwise known as the best-selling novelist John le Carré, had spied for MI5 on leftwingers like Samuel whilst at Oxford University. But this was a bit of a puzzle because he always claimed to have stopped such spying in 1954 - five years before the postcard was sent. In the TLS, I explore what was going on....'
