Jo Haynes' main research interests are focused on issues of racialisation within music, especially in relation to the theoretical and practical aspects of the consumption/production of local/global music cultures within the music industry. Her second main research interest is racism/disadvantage in education, having recently completed an evaluation of a major national educational initiative, Aiming High, focusing on African Caribbean achievement in secondary schools, on behalf of the Department for Education and Skills. She also has a research interest in the sociology of the media and culture, and qualitative research methods, particularly the use of CAQDAS.
She is currently writing about aspects of music and migration in relation to jazz and world music in Europe and is exploring facets of the consumption and production of music within Bristol as the basis of a broader study. Having also recently completed a report based on the evaluation of a DfES project focused on African Caribbean achievement in secondary schools in England, she is also developing other articles from this for future publication.
