Graduate profile: Craig Hedge

“A PhD is one of the best opportunities you have to develop your skills as a researcher, and the facilities and expertise in Bristol provide many ways in which you can explore your interests.”

What programme did you study at Bristol?

PhD Psychology

Please describe your current role and responsibilities

I currently work as a research associate in the psychology department in Cardiff University, under the supervision of Professor Petroc Sumner.

I am currently working on a project that examines individual differences in response control, and the mechanisms underlying it. As a research associate, my primary role is similar to that of a PhD student – designing, running and interpreting experiments. I also have more responsibilities with respect to undergraduate and postgraduate supervision.

Summarise your career since leaving Bristol

I am lucky enough to have started my current role fairly soon after finishing my PhD – I submitted my thesis in August, was interviewed/offered the Cardiff role in September, viva in November and started this post in December. I can only hope all my future job transitions go as smoothly!

How would you describe your experience at Bristol?

I enjoyed my time at Bristol; I had a great supervisor and was surrounded by intelligent and friendly people. One of the main things I valued was the opportunity to learn new techniques and collaborate with other people, both as part of and in addition to my PhD research.

How did your qualification help you in your career?

Aside from being a fairly necessary qualification to progress in academia, a PhD is essentially on-the-job training for a career in research. For someone interested in going in to a career which has a strong research component, the experience is great preparation.

Do you have any advice for someone considering studying Psychology?

I think the mind and behaviour is fascinating, and it is becoming increasingly important in our society to understand it. In addition to being an opportunity to learn specific skills and knowledge, many of which are useful in any career, studying Psychology can provide you with an important, critical perspective on a wide range of issues.
