Joanna Edwards

Graduated with Mathematics and Philosophy in 2014

Current role

Financial Controller at Good Energy

What was your career path after graduating?

I did an Audit graduate scheme at financial services firm EY in Bristol, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in September 2017. I left in October 2017 and spent a month in New Zealand on holiday. I then joined Good Energy as Internal Audit Manager, understanding the business and looking for process improvements, and then applied for the Financial Controller role after nine months.

I've been in my current role at Good Energy for four months, where I manage a team of eight people to deliver the financial reporting for this AIM listed company.

Why did you decide to apply for your course at Bristol?

I applied to Bristol because of its great reputation among employers as a Russel Group university, and because the city seemed lovely on the open day. My course was a great mix of written and numerical skills, which I think made me very employable after graduating.

What did you enjoy most about your time studying at the School of Mathematics?

My favourite part about studying at the School of Mathematics was meeting some great friends and being able to work together through the hard bits.

Do you have any advice or tips for prospective students looking to study Maths at Bristol?

My advice for prospective students would be that Maths gives great transferable skills that make you employable, so go for it!
