Information for postgraduate students
Graduation invitations are sent out in November to all those who are potentially eligible to graduate in February 2019, regardless of whether students have received their awards at this stage or not. You should register by 5.00 pm on Monday 10 December 2018, whether you wish to attend your graduation ceremony or not and even if your degree is not awarded at the time of the registration deadline.
If your degree is then awarded in time and you have no outstanding tuition fees, your registration will be secured. If you do not register by Monday 10 December we cannot guarantee you a place at the ceremony.
If you have not received an invitation email by Monday 26 November and you believe that you are due to graduate in February, please contact the Graduation Office.
If you have received an invitation email but know that you will not be eligible to graduate in February 2019, please contact the Graduation Office so that we can amend our records and put you forward to the next degree congregation. If you are not sure whether you will qualify in time or not you should register on the assumption that you will graduate in February. Please ensure that you have read the eligibility and registration details below before contacting us with this information.
- Examination boards
Postgraduate Taught students: In order to graduate at the February degree congregation, your degree must be awarded at a Faculty Examination Board by Friday 25 January 2019. Exam board dates for taught postgraduate students can be provided by your faculty.
Postgraduate Research students: Your examiner's report and recommendation has to be considered at a Research Degrees Examinations Board. Details of the dates of these examinations boards and their respective deadlines for receipt of examiners' reports are available here for research degrees.
Your degree must be awarded at an appropriate examinations board on or before Friday 25 January 2019 for you to graduate at the February 2019 degree congregation.
- Tuition fees
You will not be permitted to graduate unless all outstanding tuition fees have been settled by Monday 7 January 2019. While you are still a registered student you can use the MyBristol portal Fees and Funding channel to check if you have outstanding tuition fees and to make a payment. For detailed information about payments please refer to the student funding pages.
- Minor errors and definitive library copy of thesis (Research students only)
Please note that if your degree is awarded at a Research Degrees Examination Board by the relevant deadline subject to the correction of minor errors, you will still be eligible to graduate at the February 2019 congregation. However, your degree certificate will only be issued when the Postgraduate Examinations Office has received written confirmation that the corrections have been made.
Your degree certificate will only be issued once the definitive library copy of your thesis has been deposited, but again non-submission of your definitive copy by the relevant deadline will not affect your eligibility to graduate.
The registration deadline for February 2019 is 5.00 pm on Monday 10 December 2018. Please complete the online form at Student Info or Past Student Info to register your intention to attend your graduation ceremony or graduate in your absence.
If your degree is awarded in time for you to graduate at the February 2019 degree congregation and you have not registered to attend, your degree will automatically be conferred in absentia (i.e. formally awarded at a ceremony in your absence). You will then not be able to attend a future ceremony for the same award.
If you register to attend the February 2019 degree congregation and your degree is then not awarded by the relevant deadline, you will automatically be put forward to the ceremonies in July 2019. If this is the case we will send you an email to confirm the situation, shortly before the February ceremonies.
Your degree award will be posted on Student Info, or Past Student Info and you will be sent an email confirming that your award is available. Research students will also be sent a letter confirming their degree. This will be sent to your registered home address.
If your degree is not awarded in time to graduate at the February 2019 degree congregation, or if you register to attend your ceremony and your degree is then not awarded in time, you will automatically be put forward to the ceremonies in July 2019. If this is the case we will send you an email to confirm the situation, shortly before the February ceremonies.
