Entry requirements

Our 6-week, 10-week and 14-week courses are aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students who already have an offer from the University of Bristol. These courses will help you meet the English language conditions of your offer.

Find out which pre-sessional course to take

Different courses require different levels of language skill. We refer to these skill levels as 'profiles'. Your offer letter will tell you the English language profile required by your course.

Using the list below, find out which pre-sessional course you need to take to meet the terms of your offer. (Please note: the 14 week pre-sessional course is only available to students who have an offer for 'profile B' or 'profile C')

If you are an undergraduate applicant and do not meet the English language requirements for your course, you may still be eligible for our International Foundation Programme. Postgraduate applicants will need to retake the IELTS test.

Provide a certificate

You must provide a valid IELTS Academic test certificate. It must show that you meet the entry requirements for the pre-sessional course you are applying to.

A valid IELTS Academic test certificate:

Alternatively, we can accept the Trinity test if you sat the exam in London. Please contact us if you hold a London Trinity certificate.

We do not accept the IELTS Life Skills test. Find further information on the University of Bristol’s English Language entry requirements page.

Think about progression

Our pre-sessional courses for offer holders are designed to help you meet the English language conditions of your offer.

Our average progression rate onto University of Bristol degrees for the past three years is over 95 per cent. However, completing a pre-sessional short course does not guarantee progression. You must still meet all of your offer conditions, including language requirements and academic grades.
