Churchill Hall was officially opened in 1959 and for the past half century has been distinguished by a friendly, easy going atmosphere in which first years have been able to find their feet as they set out on their university careers here in Bristol. Churchill offers an ideal blend of the formal and the relaxed; we have classical music recitals and open mike evenings; we have formal halls for all, but equally popular is the playing of sports in our quad (so far I’ve seen lacrosse, Frisbee, rugby, football and – ever popular in the summer months – sliding into large paddling pools!).
Churchill is situated in Stoke Bishop, an attractive residential part of North Bristol, a stone’s throw from The Downs, Bristol’s “green lung,” and the home of a host of recreational activities. As a Hall, we are proud of our beautiful environment. As well as our leafy main quad, the Hall is also home to the University’s main arboretum below the new block and to the University’s botanical gardens over the road in The Holmes, a beautiful listed building dating back to 1879 which houses some twenty five of our students and was the place from where the D-Day landings were planned.
We are a community of some 360 undergraduates, most of them being in their first year. The Hall boasts students from a wealth of different backgrounds and places, creating a cosmopolitan atmosphere with something for everyone. We also have a wide range of facilities to match, with a library, a music practice room, access to tennis and squash courts just over the road, whilst also only being a ten minute walk from Coombe Dingle, the University’s main sports facility. Add to that a lively bar and our excellent meals and you have a warm, welcoming environment in which to start your university career.
