Each year we take a small number of students onto our Masters by Research (MSc) program. Students are placed in one of our research labs to do a 10 month research project. The head of this lab will act as your Supervisor and direct your project. You will also be assigned another member of staff as a Co-assessor, who will monitor the progress of your research training.
This course is designed to suit students who already have a significant knowledge of biosciences at undergraduate level, and are looking to learn research techniques in a real lab environment. There is no taught component to this course, although you will receive formal training in research-related skills such as scientific writing, and presenting you work in public. At the end of your 10 month project, you will be expected to write a thesis on your studies and to defend this in a viva examination.
The minimum entry requirement is a second class Bachelor of Science degree (BSc), or equivalent, in Biochemistry or a related subject. If you are an overseas student, we also require demonstration of proficiency in English - a score of at least 6.5 in IELTS, or an equivalent TOEFL score.
We do not have funding available for MSc students. The fees for this 1-year degree course (10/11) are as follows:
EU students: £3,440
Overseas students: £13,420
In addition you will need to be able to support your living expenses - we estimate that the cost of living in Bristol as a student to be about £10,000 per year.
In the range of £2000 - £5000 per year (dependent on the project).
Students can apply for MSc by Research at any time of the year. To identify a supervisor willing to sponsor an MSc project, please refer to the list on FindaMasters.com. More information about supervisors and their projects is available at FindaPhD.com and also the Research Groups listed on the School website:

Once you have identified a project of interest, please email the Supervisor(s) directly. If they are interested in pursuing your application, they will ask you to complete an online application.
