Postgraduate study

As a highly research-active School of Biochemistry, our mission is to train the next generation of life scientists.

The School of Biochemistry offers both 3 and 4-year PhD degrees. We also participate in a number of 4-year PhD programmes including those supported by the Wellcome Trust 4-year Studentships and Bristol Centre for Complexity Science. Most students publish at least one research paper during their studies; this link takes you to a selection of our recent postgraduate publications.

Postgraduate research in the School covers all aspects of modern biochemistry ranging from the dynamics of DNA and proteins to the imaging of living cells and the atomic level analysis of biological structures. For more information, see Research Staff and Projects available.

The School takes pride in the high standard of its postgraduate programme. Over 75% of our postgraduates continue their training by pursuing postdoctoral research in Academia or Industry in the UK and abroad. Our other postgraduates use the transferable skills that were obtained during their study to gain meaningful employment. I hope you are successful in finding a potential PhD project from the wide range of PhD projects on offer. Please contact me if you have any enquiries about PhD study here in Bristol Biochemistry.

Best wishes,

Professor Patty Kuwabara, Postgraduate Tutor
