Badock room description

Each student has a single study bedroom with build in storage cupboards and additional space of approximately 9' by 13' including built-in cupboard space set out in accordance with the room plan (pdf, 34.5kb ).  The configuration of the furniture must not be altered in any way, no items may be re-sited in a way that will obstruct or impede access to the heating unit.  There is no room for students to bring in extra furniture, bulky hi-fi systems or large sized personal belongings.

All rooms contain

Do pack with thought and avoid bringing too much in the first instance, or you will have problems in storing everything away and it is far easier to bring in more rather than decide what must go back home!

Every floor has either one or two sets of bathroom and toilet facilities shared between the occupants.

Where adequate bathrooms facilities allow, we have mixed floors.  Some floors will be single sex. If single sex accommodation is preferred this should be emphasised at the time of initial  application.

Accommodation Fees for 2011—2012   The room fee published on the Accommodation website must be paid plus the mandatory fees of £200 damage deposit, £15.75 student insurance (still to be confirmed) and £45 JCR fee making a total of  approximately £260.75 to be added to the published accommodation fees and included with the first term payment.

Shared rooms

An exception to the above detail is the arrangement for the final six male students allocated to Badock Hall.  They will be asked to accept shared accommodation in one of three much larger rooms, on a temporary basis.  These students will take priority for re-rooming as soon as all non-guaranteed first year students have been housed.

En Suite Rooms

There is only a small number of en suite rooms at Badock Hall.  Allocation priority is assessed by the Accommodation Office based on need.  Priority is given to those with a certified medical requirement for en suite facilities

Facilities

Within the Main Building are housed all the common rooms:

The bar is open each evening.

On the Badock campus we also have

In the Dining Hall is a grand piano available for practice and performance at any time between 0900 hrs and 1745 hrs when there are no diners.

The  Laundrette is sited under the Main Building.  It is open in term time from 08:00hrs to approximately 23:00hrs each day.  Last wash should be commenced before 21:30 daily.

A complete wash/dry costs £2.60  (£1 x 1 and  20p x 3 for a wash with  50p x 2 for a drying session).

Note that no other variation of coin will allow the machines to operate.  The Hall Office and Porters' Lodge carry change if you do not have the necessary coins:  i.e.  £1 x 1;   20p x 3;   50p x 2 for each wash+dry cycle.

Each corridor has a communal pantry area that provides snack preparation and storage equipment provided by the JCR.  Pantry areas are not designed to create full meals.  In each pantry there is:

Students will need to bring their own microwave cooking containers, utensils, crockery, glasses and cutlery to Hall — but should first read carefully the Hall booklet that clearly states limitations.

Transport

A student bus service provides transport seven days a week between Stoke Bishop and Clifton.  Every  student in University accommodation is given a bus pass to cover travel on this route from the first day of each Autumn Term to the final day of the Summer Term - although student residence is available up to early July.  With this service in place, bringing a private vehicle to Bristol may not be necessary at all.

The University does not permit any student in a hall of residence to bring a vehicle to Bristol without holding a permit for parking on their home Hall campus.  There is a limited number of parking spaces available on a pre-payment basis at Badock Hall .  The Hall has 90 bicycle spaces in limited access areas - these require booking prior to arrival.  There are also open air bike racks for 30 bikes in the Quad, free of charge.

Fines will be imposed on student vehicles parked on University property in Clifton - do not risk this.  Clifton is also subject to resident permit parking - there is little alternative parking space.

If you do park in Clifton, please ensure you are not in a restricted area or blocking any entrances.   All vehicles towed away for illegal parking are taken to the City pound - do bear in mind that the charge for release from the pound is extremely high.

Insurance of your belongings

Within the fees is incorporated an insurance premium for basic student insurance cover against theft.  Bicycles, contact lenses, room keys and mobile phones are not included in this cover—all students need to ensure they have adequate appropriate insurance before coming to Hall.  Check the insurance policy with care, pay the necessary added premium of you are to bring to Bristol a bike or other item not covered by the basic cost.

Televisions

There are no external aerial points in rooms.  All TVs brought to Hall need an individual TV licence.  It is not wise to ignore this point.  A subscription TV service is now available to students with suitable PCs or laptops to receive transmissions as part of the ResNet (University intranet) system.  Students using this facility will still require a personal TV licence.

Communications

All student rooms have an 0117 telephone number for incoming callers, the call charge will depend on the caller's provider.  Out-going external calls must be made using a special UNITEL card, provided free of charge by the University on the arrival day.  Students may make calls within the University free of charge from their room telephones.

Resnet

This is the University intranet — this facility is available in all study bedrooms, by subscription.

Christian Union

All Halls of Residence have a thriving Christian Union and Badock is no exception.  For students who would like to know more about this group use the Christian Union link.
