All residents need to be aware of the possible pitfalls, so often overlooked when joining a large community.
All residents at Badock Hall have a full set of keys, giving them access to all buildings. If anyone asks you to hold a door to enable them to enter the building, please refuse politely if you do not recognise them as a member of your unit. This method of gaining entry is called 'tailgating' and is the most widely used ploy for unauthorised persons to get into buildings. By refusing to assist you are guarding your own security and that of your fellow residents.
If you see anyone in the unit or grounds who you do not recognise and who acts suspiciously, during the working day you should call the Hall Office on 32480 internal extension. In the evening up to 23:30hrs call the Duty Tutor - Lower Hall 07887 773 801 and Upper Hall 07780 574 976. After 23:30hrs the University Security Office on 87848 will send a patrol officer to investigate at once.
Do guard your belongings with care, never leave your room door open or on the latch - even if you are with your next door neighbour. Always check the door and window are firmly shut when you go out and keep a close hold on your keys at all times. A new set will cost you £50 if they are lost.
Your priority on arrival in Hall is to ensure you are quite aware of the emergency assembly points in case the alarms sound.
If an alarm sounds continuously all students should vacate the building without delay, shutting windows and doors as they go. Assembly points are all below the tennis courts where individual unit numbers are displayed on lower external railings. This information is also provided in the 'Badock Bible' to be found on your bookcase in your room.
Failure to respond when a continuous alarm sounds is considered a serious breach of discipline and Health & Safety regulations.
Each week the alarms are tested during the day. The alarm will sound for about 6 seconds, be silenced and the sounding will repeat. The test operation lasts about 30 minutes. There is no requirement to evacuate when the pulsed alarm sounds.
No candles, joss sticks, air purifiers or any form of naked flame may be used by residents within any internal area of the Hall buildings. If discovered, such items will be confiscated at once.
The Hall is properly equipped with extinguishers throughout the campus. These must never the tampered with or moved from their position - again such action is considered a breach of the disciplinary regulations and subject to heavy fines and penalties.
Smoke detectors must never be impeded in any way. All residents need to understand that Badock Hall is a non smoking campus.
Smoking may only take place outside buildings, any resident found smoking within any building can expect to receive a fine and community service.
Only the microwave cookers and toasters provided may be used for meal preparation in the pantry areas. No food should ever be left unattended during the cooking process, thus reducing the likelihood of false alarms.
Food may not be cooked in study bedrooms. No deep frying equipment, grills or additional electrical cooking equipment apart from toasters should be brought to Hall please. This will be confiscated.
Each student is responsible for making sure that equipment brought to hall is safe. Only one 4 gang extension lead may be used from a socket outlet in any room and no trailing wires are permitted across the centre of the rooms. Square adaptors should not be used in electrical sockets.
Safety inspections are carried out during the year. Any equipment thought to be dangerous or defective will be removed from a student room and not returned until the end of the year.
The most common cause of carpet burns is the careless use of hair straighteners. These and other heated appliances should be handled with care. The cost of a new carpet is in excess of £250.
Porters will replace any broken or damaged light bulb - report the fault on a GREEN repairs form to be found under the post pigeonholes in Main Reception. Post the completed form into the Hall Office on weekdays - or hand it to the Duty Porter at weekends.
Never leave a shower, sink, basin or bath with the water running. The danger of a flood occurring is very real. When you finish in the bath or shower do check that the drain is not blocked with plastic or hair so that it can drain way freely.
If a sink is filled with dirty washing up and the tap is left dripping, overnight flooding can occur - do wash up after each meal, leaving the sink clear and make sure taps are always firmly turned off.
To report a plumbing fault or running overflow, use the GREEN repairs form to be found under the post pigeonholes in Main Reception. Post the completed form into the Hall Office - or hand it to the Duty Porter at weekends.
