Fashion challenge

What and why?

Avoid buying new clothes.

The clothing and textiles industry now accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than international aviation and shipping combined. Clothes that are thrown away or are not suitable for reuse or recycling mostly end up in landfill or incinerators. The science says1 we should aim to only buy up to three items of new clothing a year. This means thinking carefully about what we need and avoiding fast fashion in favour of timeless, well-made pieces.

Buy second-hand.

Our changing styles, moods, hobbies and special occasions mean many of us enjoy mixing up our wardrobe. By choosing to shop for clothes in charity and vintage shops or shopping for pre-owned clothing online, you’re reducing the emissions associated with the production line and transit of the fashion industry, as well as supporting charities and other small business owners.

Recycle, rent and re-use.

Fast fashion now produces around 52 “micro-seasons” a year2, leading us to buy clothing more often than is necessary. Disposed clothes end up in landfill as charity organisations can’t cope with the number of donations that are exceeding the demand in their local areas. By using your creativity to tailor clothes, swapping with friends or renting outfits, you avoid buying new items and extend the lifecycle of textiles.

Top tips

  1. Choose high-quality and durable fabrics. Choosing cotton t-shirts over viscose ones, wearing linen clothes during warm days or getting recycled fabrics is a general financial saving over time and better for the environment.
  2. Before buying a new piece of clothing consider how many times you are likely to wear it. Do you already own something similar that could be repaired or adjusted
  3. Consider taking a repairs and alterations masterclass such as Introduction to sewing or Create Patchwork Joggers from Upcycled Materials.
  4. Browse charity and vintage shops as the norm whenever you spot one.
  5. Download Depop and Vinted and browse by your favourite styles and brands.
  6. Check out HURR for renting fashion trends, By Rotation for peer-to-peer lending, Big Sister Swap for clothes swapping and Bundlee for baby clothing.
