Course summary
Maths powers computing and computing has revolutionised modern mathematics, allowing us to solve complex problems using advanced techniques faster than ever before.
Our MEng Mathematics and Computer Science degree combines the fundamentals of both disciplines, giving you a strong mathematical foundation. This enables you to approach computer science not just as an engineering discipline, but as a rigorous scientific field grounded in logic and abstraction.
In this four-year joint honours course, you'll be equipped to contribute to areas ranging from pure mathematics to applied computer science, including cryptography, data science, financial modelling and quantum algorithms. You will develop expertise in the rapidly evolving fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning by studying these subjects from both mathematical and applied perspectives.
Join a university ranked 4th in the UK for maths research and 7th for computer science research (THE analysis of REF 2021), with an excellent reputation for teaching and learning (a top ten UK university, QS World University Rankings 2026).
Our Think Big international scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate students could help you fund your UK study at the University of Bristol.
Course structure
In your first and second years, you will study essential, core components of mathematics and computer science, providing you with a strong foundation for future years. Subsequently, you will have the opportunity to tailor your mathematics and computer science options so that you graduate with a balance of theoretical and practical skills that reflect your interests.
