Course summary
This joint honours degree course allows you to combine the study of film with Portuguese (taught from beginners' level), a language spoken in a diverse range of countries around the world. The political importance of countries like Angola and Brazil means that Portuguese speakers are increasingly in demand. This course offers a particularly strong intellectual challenge with a cosmopolitan perspective.
In the Department of Film and Television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners, you will explore the history, criticism and context of film and television. You will consider theoretical perspectives, appreciate how films are made and engage in creative work such as practical filmmaking activities.
You will study film alongside Portuguese language (taught only at beginners' level), history and culture units, choosing from a wide range of options that allow you to pursue your own interests. Both departments offer a vibrant learning environment with research-led teaching.
You will spend your third year abroad on a study or work placement in a Portuguese-speaking country, refining your language skills and cultural understanding. To find out more about studying abroad, visit the Centre for Study Abroad.
In your final year, you will return to Bristol, where you have the chance to undertake a range of guided project work, including a placement in the creative industries.
