Social Policy at Bristol 18th in QS World Subject Rankings 2026

The School for Policy Studies is excited to share the excellent improvement in subject ranking in the QS World University Subject Rankings, moving 15 places up to 18th in the world for Social Policy and Administration.

At the University as a whole, we have 33 subjects ranked in the world’s top 100, ten of those in the top 50 and five of those are in the top 20 – so 18th is something to celebrate!

As the Head of School, Karen West, said:

‘I am delighted that the School has received this recognition of its global standing.  We have consistently been in the top 40 in the global rankings, but this latest ranking places the School among the very best in the world.  This complements the recognition that we have for our research – 97% of our research was rated as world leading or internationally excellent at the last REF exercise – and for our taught programmes – social policy is ranked 3rd in the UK in the Complete University Guide.’

QS World University Rankings by Subject evaluate universities based on academic and employer reputation, research impact, the productivity and citation impact of a researcher's publications, and the diversity and strength of their international research collaborations.

These rankings reflect our reputation in the world for many of our key audiences and play a key part in building global awareness of the work that takes place at the School.

The total score for Social Policy and Administration was 83.2 out of 100. Academic reputation scored 88.1. Employer reputation was scored as 72.3, attained by survey responses to employers who are asked about their perception of the quality of an institution’s graduates. Finally, citations per paper, which reflect research impact and institutional quality, were scored at 70.4.
