The School for Policy studies in the Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences has become part of the intramural group of universities designated as School Members in the renewed composition of the NIHR School for Social Care Research (SSCR). Adult social care research in England will receive up to £31 million in funding over 5 years to support the next phase of the NIHR School for Social Care Research (SSCR). Academics in the School for Policy Studies will help shape its strategy and undertake collaborative and impactful research to help improve and inform the evidence base and social care practice.
The School’s membership was refreshed through open competition and NIHR SSCR Phase four brings together leading academic centres demonstrating excellence in social care research.
The six NIHR SSCR member institutions are:
- University of York (lead University)
- University of Bristol
- University of Birmingham
- A collaboration between the Universities of Leeds and Leeds Beckett
- London School of Economics and Political Science
- University of Sheffield
The NIHR SSCR supports internationally leading adult social care research and capacity building for researchers working to improve social care practice. This next round of funding will further support the School’s core vision to provide better evidence for what works in adult social care and how this can be applied across the whole country. This will support, mobilise and deliver impact for the benefit of the public as service users, carers and the workforce.
Prof David Abbott, who leads the SSCR work in the School for Policy Studies, said:
‘This is a hugely exciting opportunity for colleagues in the School who are working at the forefront of research in adult social care. Our success in becoming part of the next phase of NIHR SSCR speaks to the quality and innovation of the research we do here at SPS. Given the pressing need to be engaged with the policy and research agenda in adult social care, we look forward to contributing to the ongoing success of NIHR SSCR.’
