Unpaid Care Policies in the UK: Rights, Resources and Relationships
Common Room 8 Priory Road Bristol BS8 1TZ
Professor Liz Lloyd's new book casts a critical eye over three decades of policy making on unpaid care.
Unpaid Care Policies in the UK: Rights, Resources and Relationships, examines the history of policies and strategies on unpaid care in all parts of the UK since the 1990s. It questions why after decades of policies, strategies and consultations that raised hopes and expectations and which promoted the rights of carers, unpaid care remains today in a marginal position, poorly resourced, frequently overlooked and ignored. Drawing on theoretical perspectives from feminist ethics, gerontology and social policy, it challenges both the values upon which policies have been developed and the political decisions affecting their implementation. It argues for a shift of perspective towards policies and practices based on the universal human need for care and for the benefit of relationships of care.
Liz Lloyd is a Senior Research Fellow in the School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and a Senior Research Fellow at the NIHR School for Social Care Research.
