EU funding post-Brexit summary

Horizon 2020

While the UK remains a member state, UK universities and organisations remain eligible to bid for funding, participate in, and lead consortia in H2020. How the UK will participate after Brexit will be determined by the ongoing negotiations.

If there is a deal

The withdrawal agreement envisages that the UK will participate fully in Horizon 2020 until the end of the programme (31 December 2020), including after the UK’s withdrawal from the EU

If there is a no deal scenario

The UK Government’s Underwrite Guarantee and POST EU Exit Guarantee Extension will guarantee

 - the payment of ALL successful awards (for the lifetime of the projects, even if these last beyond 2020) where the bid was submitted to the European Commission before UK exit from the EU, even if the award was granted after exit (and if a two-stage process, so long as first-stage bid submitted before exit).

- the payment of successful (collaborative) awards (for the lifetime of the projects, even if these last beyond 2020) involving UK entities as a third country, where the bid was submitted to the EU from the date of exit until the end of 2020 (this means collaborative projects with other EU partners and NOT individual ERC or Marie Curie grants)

Beyond Horizon 2020: Horizon Europe

From January 2021, Horizon 2020 will be replaced by Horizon Europe, the next 7-year Research and Innovation programme. The UK is fully participating in the development of this programme and has confirmed that it intends to be a full associated partner to the programme. If this is agreed the UK will have full access to apply to all calls including collaborative, ERC and Marie Curie grants.
