Thinking Futures to share Bristol’s leading social science research

Bristol could lead the way in becoming a ‘child-friendly’ city thanks to a project that will see young people involved in developing a child-informed vision for planners and city councils to use when designing new city layouts and reviewing existing provisions for children in cities. The project is just one of a series of initiatives being showcased by some of the UK’s leading social scientists next month as part of the University of Bristol’s Thinking Futures festival [5 to 13 Nov].

Honorary Hungarian doctorate for Bristol engineering mathematician

Alan Champneys, Professor of Applied Nonlinear Mathematics in the Department of Engineering Mathematics at the University of Bristol has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) in recognition of his internationally reputed activities within the specialised branch of mechanical engineering. The Doctor of Engineering was awarded at a ceremony last weekend [Saturday 28 May].

Bristol leading on quantum innovation

The University of Bristol’s Quantum Engineering Technology Labs (QETLabs) has set out to change the way quantum technologies are designed, developed and manufactured and to create a world-leading centre to train entrepreneurially-minded quantum engineers. Today [Tuesday 1 March] the Universities & Science Minister Jo Johnson announced QETLabs has been successfully awarded funding of £9 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to make this happen.
