Sources of support for Black, Asian and minority ethnic students and staff

Bristol Medical School understands how important it is to feel fully supported both where you study and at your place of work. Therefore, we have compiled a list of resources of support for all Black, Asian and minority ethnic students and staff. If there are any resources that you know of that you would like to see mentioned in the pages below, please contact us at  and they will be added to the pages.

 

African & Caribbean Society

Safe space for students to display, discuss and celebrate their culture. 

AfroLit Society

Safe and welcoming  environment for students to discover and appreciate literature & literary art produced by Black writers.

Asian Society

All-inclusive society that allows individuals of Asian heritage to meet and interact with each other.

Bristol SU BAME Network

Elected to provide a safe space within the University of Bristol Students’ Union for self-identifying BME students on campus.

Hindu Society

Events, socials, Aartis, sports, arts and volunteering, in one of the largest South-Asian or Hindu organisations in the South-West of England.

Muslim Medics - Bristol 

Student-led NGO endeavouring to use positive & inclusive virtues and values to create a sense of community amongst medical students.

African Caribbean Medical Mentors

Mentoring, outreach programmes and events for prospective black students in medicine and dentistry.

Black Medical Society

Providing mentorship for both  prospective and current medical students, networking opportunities and spotlighting excellence. 

GMC - Black and Minority Ethnic Doctors Forum

Helps to make sure General Medical Council (GMC) regulatory work responds to the needs of black and minority ethnic (BME) doctors practising in the UK.

Melanin Medics

A non-profit charitable organisation supporting African and Caribbean aspiring medics, medical students and doctors in the UK. Melanin Medics has been focused to implement positive solutions which will help to overcome underrepresentation and socio-economic barriers in Medicine.

Modern Day Medics

Non profit run by a group of diverse medical students and junior doctors supporting prospective BME, current medical students and junior doctors.

Black Men Talk Black Women Talk

BMWT is a safe space for black men and women to discuss their life experiences and interpretations of them. Each session focuses on the exploration and sharing of various wellbeing techniques in response to new topics and themes.

Global Lounge

Cultural hub encouraging community, integration and celebration of heritage.

BAME staff network

Community to connect, share experiences with and drive changes at UOB for BAME staff.

Be More Empowered (BME) for Success Programme

Support for undergraduate Black Asian and Minority Ethnic students. The programme aims to improve the experience and celebrate the success of students from these backgrounds.

Alternative Asians

Termly discussions that aim to promote wellbeing and racial empowerment amongst East Asian students, through informal chats and workshops.

NAOS

Intercultural therapy service. As well as specialising in therapeutic support for children, young people, their parents, carers, and professionals – we are a trauma-informed and attachment-based service.

Domestic abuse support service (Polish, South Asian and Somali workers). Black resettlement and crisis response workers, and black woman's safe house. Specific South Asian domestic abuse crisis response service.

Nilaari

Culturally appropriate counselling service providing help and support for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people. Available to students and now staff.

The Black, African and Asian Therapy Network

Home of the largest community of Counsellors and Psychotherapists of Black, African, Asian and Caribbean Heritage in the UK.

The Bristol BME Service (Bristol Community Support services)

The aim of the service is to provide culturally appropriate high quality, issue based, outcome focused advocacy. Specific to secondary care mental health, the service will provide advocacy to people in psychiatric hospital (inpatients) across Bristol.

Bristol Hate Crime & Discrimination Services

Bristol Hate Crime and Discrimination Services (BHC&DS) is a partnership of six organisations (SARI, Brandon Trust, Bristol Mind, Off the record, Resolve West and Bristol Law Centre). A complete service for victims of hate crime and discrimination in Bristol.

Report + Support

System for reporting bullying, harassment, assault and discrimination anonymously. Upcoming campaign around reporting racism/transparency.

Stand Against Racism and Inequality (SARI)

Service user/community-oriented agency that provides support and advice to victims of hate, and promotes equality.

 

Bristol Black Carers

Charity committed to providing person-centred and holistic services, support and assistance for Caribbean, African and Asian Carers in Bristol.

Dhek Bhal

Respite breaks, day care, self help and advocacy activities for the South Asian Community in Bristol & South Gloucestershire.

Off the Record - Project Zazi

The project offers a mix of one-to-one support and different kinds of group work (both digital and face-to-face). In all these spaces they aim to provide safe and brave atmospheres where you can explore your identity and culture. try new activities and learn new skills.

Black South West Network (BSWN)

BSWN’s over-arching strategic intent is to build dynamic, independent, and strong Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities, businesses and organizations that are empowered to flourish while challenging systemic barriers and forging a true path for themselves.
