The Bristol Medical School's Anti-Racism Taskforce

The Medical Anti-Racism Taskforce (MART) was established in the summer of 2020, following the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent increased attention to the Black Lives Matter protests. At the time of these protests Bristol Medical School wrote to the MB ChB undergraduate medical programme outlining an intention to formalise undergoing decolonisation work and create a anti-racist culture. Subsequently in a partnership with the BAME Medical Student Group (BAME-MSG) it was agreed that the formation of the a Medical Anti-Racism Taskforce (MART) was required to tackle racism in all its form across the whole of the Medical School. The purpose is to help create an inclusive environment that challenges the exclusions created by racism for our undergraduates, postgraduates, academic, research and professional services staff.

You can find more information, such as the groups ongoing and future work, the membership, and how to get in touch here.

Our Decolonisation of the Curriculum Special Interest Group has also created a website that hosts a framework for decolonising the curriculum at the Bristol Medical School and can be found here.

Staff

At the Bristol Medical School and the University as a whole we are committed to ensuring staff from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds feel welcome and supported during their time here. Please find information about the Anti-Racism work at the University of Bristol by visiting our page here.

We also have a dedicated Staff Inclusion page focussing on Race, where you can find resources such as information on our Race Equality Initiatives, our BAME Staff Network, Available Counselling for BAME Staff and our Gender and Ethnicity Pay Gap Reporting.

Staff within our Medical School are also involved in an Anti-Racism Taskforce, also referred to as MART. Information on how to contact the group, as well as join, can be found on our Sway page.

Students

At Bristol Medical School we feel it is vital that student voices are heard and respected. This is especially important for students from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds who experience disproportionate barriers to inclusion in higher education across the whole of the UK.  In response to student demands we have created the Medical Anti-Racism Task Force (MART) and continue to embed anti-racist, active bystander skills, and authentic diverse representation into our curricula. We are very proud of the relationship we have established with student groups campaigning on these issues, and in response to the identified needs for further work in this area created the role of Deputy Education Director for Student Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). In addition our Student EDI Forum has a paid student advocate who ensures that race, ethnicity and anti-racism remain central issues in our ongoing BMS Student EDI Agenda. The Race and Ethnicity Advocate can be contacted here alongside our other advocates.
