Mathematics Innovation Initiative

Bristol’s Mathematics Innovation Initiative (MII) helps tackle real-world challenges with mathematically driven solutions.

What we offer

We connect mathematical scientists with business, industry and government. Led by Professor Daniel Lawson with Innovation Research Associate Dr Miquel Perello Nieto, the team helps organisations to address key problems with mathematical innovation.

Current live and developing projects range from understanding the role of agentic AI in commercial processes to generating an app that empowers patients in healthcare management.

Inviting new partnership interest

We are currently inviting interest from potential research collaborations.

We can offer agile approaches to match your organisation’s needs. The variety of projects we work on typically include:

  • Co-developing a partnership to address a business, process or organisational problem
  • Delivering consulting services
  • Co-creating exploratory research projects
  • Supporting a PhD researcher for longer-term investigation

The timescales our researchers work to vary from short one to three-month projects up to multi-year collaborations.

Maths at Bristol has longstanding industry connections, with an engaged Industrial Advisory Board and list of confidential and public partnerships that include QinetiQ, Allianz, the Office for National Statistics and GSK. We also work with start-ups, SMEs and research institutes.
