IAS Benjamin Meaker Visiting Professor William Idsari

William Idsardi is Professor and Head of Linguistics and Professor of Neuroscience and Cognitive Science at the University of Maryland, College Park. His recent research focuses on finding the fundamental units and processes that support human speech and facilitate interface with other cognitive systems, i.e. articulatory motor system, auditory perceptual system and memory. He is a leading figure in the fields of computational phonology and the cognitive neuroscience of speech perception with publications in top journals such as Science, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society and Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences.

Recent research by Professor Idsardi used magneto-encephalography (MEG) to record early brain responses has discovered a cortical “map” for Turkish vowels and evidence for dialect extraction.
