Peter van Beukelen
Professor Peter van Beukelen is a world-leading veterinary educator based at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, the first European veterinary school to gain accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association. He spent twenty years as a clinician in large animal internal medicine after which Peter’s career path turned towards an increasing focus on veterinary education and he led the development of Utrecht’s internationally renowned veterinary education research group. He has supervised 8 PhD students, published around 75 peer-reviewed papers and played a crucial role in securing several large European Union grants including leading a study of informal lifelong learning, that resulted in the development of a worldwide online veterinary education network, and recently assisted his research team in another successful application to study workplace-based feedback and assessment and the impact of electronic portfolios. He is the world leading authority on veterinary curriculum design, implementation and evaluation and over a period of 20 years was responsible for three reviews of the veterinary undergraduate curriculum at Utrecht. Peter has worked extensively with leading educators from medical as well as veterinary education, and has regularly delivered plenaries and workshops to support veterinary education, research and curriculum development around the world, most recently (March 2015) in South Africa. He was a founding member and first president (from 2004 to 2010) of Veterinary Education Worldwide (ViEW), an association aiming to promote and support excellence in veterinary education and provide an international network for discourse amongst veterinary educators and cooperation in veterinary educational research.
