Sam Rapier, BA Ancient History, Bristol

My three years at Bristol helped me to grow both academically and personally, and encouraged me to explore my interests in a way that lead me down paths I could never have imagined before the start of my degree.

The support and enthusiasm of the lecturers and staff made my studies enjoyable and engaging, and the variety of optional modules available opened up a range of possibilities and educational pathways. I loved that we were able to tailor our own experience and create a course unique to each student. I was able to follow my curiosity and supported to create or choose my own essay topics in several modules, as well as in my dissertation.

I am especially grateful for the ‘Applied Classics’ module in 3rd year that encouraged us to bring in our other interests and think about the practical applications of Classics to the modern world. This module helped me to think about the ways in which I could use Classics in my life and take it forwards. It was this module that inspired me to create ‘Escape From Pompeii’ - the educational board game that became the springboard for my career as an entrepreneur, starting up a company named Exekias Games Ltd . Without this focus on interdisciplinary study and application of knowledge, and the support to follow my interests, this path would likely never have opened to me.
