Temporary change to fit notes
In line with advice from GOV.UK, please find below details of a temporary change to fit notes. We will update you again on this as soon as further information is released.
For Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), where employees go off sick on or after 10 December 2021, employers can only ask employees for proof of sickness (such as a fit note) after 28 days of sickness (including non-working days). Proof of sickness cannot be requested earlier than 28 days.
These changes are to give GP’s more time to work on the Coronavirus (Covid-19) booster programme.
If someone is absent due to sickness for 28 calendar days or less (including weekends), they do not need a fit note. This means they tell their employer they're not well enough to work and do not need to provide any further medical evidence. This is called 'self-certifying' their sick leave. They should still be paid the amount of sick pay that's in their contract.
If someone has a period of sickness absence for longer than 28 calendar days (no matter how many days they work each week), then they should get a fit note from their doctor.
