Ph.D. student Stefania Akromah has been recognised on the 2023 Inspirational Bristol Scientists Board.

Akromah, a PhD student from the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Composites Science Engineering and Manufacturing was recognised as part of the Inspirational Bristol Scientists Board 2023. The celebration was held on 26 April and was led by the Dean of Science, Professor Jens Marklof.

The board was created by Lara Lalemi and Fred Manby in 2019 to showcase the significant achievements of students from historically underrepresented groups in STEM.

Akromah said: "I was deeply honoured to receive the Inspirational Bristol Scientists award. To be recognised for my efforts within the black community was a humbling experience and truly gratifying. It serves as a testament to the power of representation and the importance of diverse voices in the scientific community. It has motivated me to keep pushing beyond boundaries and continue my quest to promote sustainability in developing countries.

"I am grateful for this award, not only for the validation it provides, but also for the platform it offers to amplify the voices of black scientists dedicated to positive transformation. I want to seize this opportunity to encourage other black scientists to fearlessly pursue their dreams and make a lasting impact, not only within our communities, but also across the globe.”

The 2023 board celebrated eight outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students who have achievements in research, teaching, and contributions to the community. They are Stefania Akromah (Engineering), Lara Lalemi (Chemistry), Sbu Mbatha (Chemistry), Jerry Mintah (Chemistry), Rafael Moreno Tortolero (Chemistry), Shaun Olok-Jacobs (Chemistry), Andre Rowe (Earth Sciences) and Abdirahman Sheik Hassan (Engineering).
