Universities are increasingly focused on impact-driven research, with interdisciplinary teams and non-academic partners collaborating on significant social issues. Teams are often encouraged to pursue activities relevant to (for e.g.,) the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, or related to global trends such as climate change or the rise of autonomous systems. Yet, developing productive teams to work across the humanities, arts, social sciences (HASS), and science, technology, and medical (STEM) disciplines, requires paradigm shifting, patience, and trust. External, non-university partners must also be open to change, ensuring that research evidence and innovations will be adopted, in practice. This seminar explores strategies to address the professional learning needs of diverse collaborative teams embarking on impact-driven, interdisciplinary research. Results of both competitive, nationally funded projects and industry-sponsored research will be presented, to examine the challenges involved in co-designing impact-focused research across various HASS and STEM disciplines. The seminar includes discussion of a model for qualitative co-design that can guide project development across disciplines and practice contexts.
