Course requirements (what applicants need to fulfil to undertake the course)	This CPD day is open to all GDC-registered professionals (therapists, hygienists, dentists and dental nurses), including students from all disciplines.

Course Objectives

The session will include hands-on extra-oral and intra-oral assessment, helping you develop confidence in recognising normal anatomy, signs, symptoms and abnormalities that may require further investigation or referral.

We will also explore supportive products and practical approaches to managing common symptoms and challenges experienced by mouth cancer patients, alongside essential mouth care advice.

The day will also cover the long-term and late effects of mouth cancer treatment, including ongoing oral health needs and how dental professionals can support patients throughout their cancer journey.

A practical, informative and patient-focused day designed to increase confidence, strengthen clinical knowledge and support better patient outcomes.

By the end of the session, you will be able to:

Recognise the key signs, symptoms and risk factors associated with mouth cancer, including oral abnormalities that may require further investigation and identify appropriate referral pathways
Undertake an extra-oral and intra-oral examination, using a systematic approach to identify normal anatomy and potential abnormalities.
Differentiate between common oral presentations and potentially concerning changes
Discuss appropriate mouth care for patients with mouth cancer, including treatment-related, psychological and psychosocial effects, including intimacy
Describe the potential late effects of mouth cancer and its treatment.

This CPD day is hosted by Bristol Dental School in support of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, helping to raise awareness and promote early recognition, prevention and better outcomes for patients affected by mouth cancer.

Professor Mike Lewis

PhD, FDSRCPS, FDSRCS(Eng), FRCPath, FFGDP(UK), FHEA

Emeritus Professor of Oral Medicine
Chief Clinical Ambassador of the Mouth Cancer Foundation

Mike is Emeritus Professor of Oral Medicine at Cardiff University. He has held a number of senior professional positions including, Dean of the School of Dentistry at Cardiff University, Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow, President of the British Society for Oral Medicine and President of the British Society for Oral & Dental Research. Mike has published over 200 scientific articles, authored six medical textbooks and delivered more than 800 invited presentations worldwide. He is a Chief Clinical Ambassador for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and member of Council at the GDC.

Jocelyn Harding

Jocelyn “Joss” began her dental career as a Royal Navy dental nurse in 1987 before qualifying as a dental hygienist in 1992. During her nine years of service, she was posted to Gibraltar, Hong Kong and Hawaii.

Joss has since become a published author and respected educator, with her research appearing in leading dental journals. She has received numerous awards, including Dental Hygienist of the Year at the Probe Awards in 2018 and Private Dentistry’s Dental Hygienist of the Year in 2025. She completed her MSc in 2023 and published a peer-reviewed textbook that has gained international recognition.

Joss continues to work in clinical practice and as a Clinical Tutor at Bristol Dental School. She is Treasurer of UKOMiC and currently serves as President of the Mouth Cancer Foundation in a voluntary three-year role.

Bryan Webber

Bryan Webber qualified from Cardiff Dental School in 1973. He spent the majority of his time in NHS general dental practice in Barry, Port Talbot and Dinas Powys. Bryan worked for over 35 years as Training Programme Director for Dental Foundation Training and also for HEIW as a Dental Educator. Bryan eventually retired in 2023 after 50 years within the NHS. He was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer in 2020 and was the first patient to be part of the PEARL Clinical Trial. He now acts as a patient representative for a number of organisations and talks extensively to groups within the dental profession.
