Atraumatic Extractions and Ridge Preservation

A one-day, hands-on course providing a comprehensive overview of atraumatic extraction, ridge preservation and grafting techniques prior to dental implant placement.
Course Overview
The morning combines interactive teaching and case-based discussion with hands-on exercises using models. Topics will include patient assessment and case selection, treatment planning, extraction-socket healing, aseptic technique, biomaterial selection, ridge-preservation protocols and the management of complications. There will be a strong emphasis on clinical cases drawn from Dr Jones’s and Dr Korzuch’s own practice.
During the afternoon, participants will work on phantom heads fitted with highly realistic jaws and teeth. They will perform atraumatic extractions and practise ridge-preservation techniques in a simulated clinical environment, helping to bridge the gap between model-based exercises and patient care.
The course is designed to develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to assess and manage appropriately selected ridge-preservation cases. The techniques taught are intended to be directly transferable to suitable cases in general dental practice.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Explain the principles of extraction-socket healing and the rationale for ridge preservation.
- Assess extraction sites and identify cases suitable for ridge preservation before future implant placement.
- Formulate an appropriate treatment plan, including surgical and aseptic preparation.
- Select suitable instruments, biomaterials and techniques for atraumatic extraction and ridge preservation.
- Perform atraumatic extraction techniques using realistic phantom-head models.
- Practise the key stages of ridge preservation and graft placement in a simulated clinical environment.
- Recognise, minimise and appropriately manage common complications associated with these procedures.
