You can receive your tuition fee and maintenance loan from Student Finance while you are abroad. The amount you will receive depends on whether you study abroad or undertake a work placement abroad.

The University is awaiting guidance from the Student Loan Company Policy Team with regards to how student finance will be assessed under the Turing Scheme.

You may be eligible for a means-tested travel grant from Student Finance England if:

• you receive Student Finance England funding, and
• you are studying at an overseas institution for at least 50% of any term in the academic year, and
• your household income is below £39,796

Students on work placements are not eligible for the travel grant.

If eligible, you can apply to claim back study abroad related costs such as:

The Turing Scheme is a UK government funding programme that supports students undertaking a placement abroad. The Turing Scheme prioritises funding for students from under-represented and SEND backgrounds and allocates funding to universities on an annual basis. As the University of Bristol’s Turing funding allocation for 2022 – 2023 is limited, we are prioritising funding for students who meet under-represented criteria. Unfortunately, the University was only granted half of the amount of funding we applied for, so we do not have sufficient funds to provide Turing funding to all students going abroad.

Turing Eligibility Criteria for 2022-23:

Students’ placement must meet ALL the following criteria to be eligible for Turing funding:

1. Your placement must be undertaken outside the UK;

2. Your placement must be a minimum of one month (28 days) in country;

3. Your placement must be in-person.

4. Your placement must NOT be funded by another source of funding e.g. Erasmus+ funding. This does not include Student Finance maintenance loans or grants.

5. Your placement is only eligible for funding for the days spent on placement between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023 (Turing programme dates) – i.e., Any time spent on placement before 1 September is not eligible for Turing funding

Your placement must also meet one of the following placement types:

School of Modern Languages (SML) students ONLY:

• Full year study or work placements
• TB1 work and study placements which were NOT offered Erasmus+ funding.
• All TB2 works placements
• All TB2 study placements (including language courses) undertaken by students who meet Turing under-represented criteria*.

Non-School of Modern Languages study abroad students:

• TB1 only study placements
• TB1 / TB2 or full year placements undertaken by students who meet Turing under-represented criteria*.

Faculty of Engineering Year in Industry ONLY:

• Year in Industry placements for students who meet Turing under-represented criteria*.

Bristol Medical School ONLY:

• Medical electives for year 5 students who meet Turing under-represented criteria*.

*Turing under-represented criteria:

Home undergraduate students who meet at least one of the following criteria:

• Students with an annual household income of £42,875 or less;
• Students who are care-experienced;
• Students receiving Universal Credit or income-related benefits because they are financially supporting themselves or a dependent
• Students who have caring responsibilities;
• Estranged students;
• Refugees and asylum seekers.

Scholarships and grants for studying abroad

• BUTEX Study Abroad scholarship.
• JASSO Scholarship for students studying abroad in Japan.
• DUO-Singapore Fellowship Scholarship for students studying abroad in Singapore.
• DUO-Korea Fellowship Scholarship for students studying abroad in South Korea.

Professional societies

Professional societies can offer travel awards to their members. Check with societies such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers or the Royal Aeronautical Societies for more information.

Other external organisations

Depending on your personal situation, you may be able to bid or apply for funds through organisations listed on Turn2Us.

If you are studying abroad for the full academic year, you can apply for:

• Tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition fee (£1,385)
• Means-tested maintenace loan at overseas rate (minimum: £5,374 maximum: £11,116)
• Travel grant available for means-tested students
• University of Bristol Bursary available for those that meet the eligibility criteria.

If you are completing an overseas work placement (including two separate placements) for the full academic year, you can apply for:

• Tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition fee (£1,385)
• Non-means tested maintenance loan at the overseas rate of £2,788. If this will be your only income, you will need to source other income.

Students doing a full year overseas work placement are not eligible for a travel grant.

You may be eligible for the UK Turing funding and an increased maintenace loan. Students who receive a maintenace loan will be prioritised. The University of Bristol will not be able to confirm this funding until July 2022 and all eligible students will be contacted by the end of July.

If you are abroad for a full academic year and are spending one semester studying and one semester on a work placement, you can apply for:

• Tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition fee (£1,385)
• Maintenace loan:
  1. For study: overseas rate of means-tested loan (minimum: £5,374 maximum: £11,116)
  2. For work placement: standard rate of means-tested loan (minimum: £4,524 maximum: £9,706)

Term 2 loan rate will be paid at the rate you are doing more of (study or work placement).

• Travel grant:
  1. For study: Available for means-tested students
  2. For work: Not eligible for work placements

• University of Bristol Bursary available for those that meet the eligibility criteria.
