Why did you choose Bristol for your undergraduate degree?

“The University of Bristol is an excellent choice for individuals who are seeking academic challenge whilst living in a vibrant, social city.  With Bristol being ranked among the top five universities for research, I was confident I’d be learning from experts at the forefront of their fields and engaging with the latest scientific developments.  Bristol's Biomedical Sciences course stood out compared to other universities’ due to its breadth and flexibility, allowing me to explore different areas of science before specialising in what interested me most.

I was also drawn to Bristol for its strong student presence and the chance to live in a city with so much character – whether it’s the peaceful elegance of Clifton or the vibrant feel of Park Street and Whiteladies Road.”

How would you sum up your experience?

“Although it was challenging at times, my experience at the University of Bristol was both academically enriching and personally transformative.  I was challenged to think critically, supported by passionate and knowledgeable staff and given the flexibility to shape my degree around my interests.

Beyond the lecture theatre, the vibrant student community and the city’s energy made it a truly memorable and rewarding place to study.  The academic and social skills I developed during my undergraduate studies are invaluable and will continue to support both my personal growth and professional development throughout my life.”

What were the staff like?

“From doing a combination of lectures, practicals and workshops during my studies, it was evident that all of the staff were extremely passionate about their work.  Many of the staff are active researchers in their respective fields, meaning lectures often included the latest developments and ensured we learned from the forefront of scientific research.

The teaching staff were always approachable and supportive, however still pushed me to think critically and develop as an independent learner.  I appreciated how approachable they were, whether it was during office hours or via email, they were always willing to offer guidance.  I was particularly fortunate to have a dissertation supervisor who was not only highly knowledgeable and passionate about his field, but also consistently supportive throughout every stage of the project.”

How did your degree influence what you went on to next?

“From studying Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bristol, I was given the chance to study lots of different modules covering a wide range of topics including immunology, virology, oncology and microbiology. This reinforced my passion for science and the desire to pursue a career in the scientific field.  In addition, engaging in practicals throughout my degree helped me clarify that my interests lay outside of lab-based roles and further academic research.

Whilst studying for my degree I completed two summer internships at AstraZeneca, and after graduation I went on to do a two-year graduate scheme at MSD (Merck, Sharp & Dohme).  As a result, working in the pharmaceutical industry has allowed me to pursue a science-related career whilst remaining outside the lab.  I want others to know that completing a Biomedical Sciences degree doesn't limit you to laboratory-based roles, the career options are far more diverse!”

What advice would you offer to students contemplating a place at Bristol?

“If you are contemplating Bristol, I would definitely recommend applying as it has a strong academic reputation as well as being a diverse, student-friendly and creative city that welcomes individuals from all areas and backgrounds.

If you are interested in science, but do not want to commit to a single career path or discipline, Biomedical Sciences is a perfect degree for you! The course gives you the chance to explore different topics in your early years, with the flexibility to tailor your degree to your interests as you progress.

If you’re looking for a balance between a top-tier education and an enjoyable student experience, Bristol is a brilliant place to be, however be ready to walk up lots of hills!”
