Why did you choose Bristol for your undergraduate degree?
“When deciding on a university, I explored many options and spoke to representatives from universities across the UK for months. The team I spoke to from the University of Bristol, however, really stood out. Unlike others, they didn’t try to oversell themselves or boast about being a Russell Group university, despite its impressive reputation. Instead, they were warm, welcoming, and genuinely interested in me as a person. They took the time to understand why I was interested in the course and what my goals were, without rushing to move on to the next prospective student.
Funnily enough, as an international student, I didn’t even know what the Russell Group was at the time! My decision to consider Bristol was purely based on the positive impression they made. Out of the many universities I explored, Bristol made me feel the most welcome, with an authenticity and warmth that stood out. This inspired me to visit the city, and that trip became the final piece of the puzzle. I discovered a vibrant, beautiful place filled with welcoming people. It felt like the perfect fit. Finding out later that Bristol was also a highly ranked university was just the cherry on top!”
How would you sum up your experience?
“My experience at Bristol exceeded all my expectations. In moments when I felt uncertain about my future, I always found the support I needed, and I appreciated that there was never any pressure to follow a specific path. Like any journey, there were ups and downs, but the university consistently celebrated my successes, encouraged me to strive for more, and provided invaluable support during difficult times.
The teaching labs were a highlight for me, I was captivated by every practical session. More importantly, the challenges I faced and the opportunities I embraced have prepared me for countless situations in life. My time at Bristol has helped me grow not only as a scientist but also as a person, equipping me with the confidence and skills to move forward.”
What were the staff like?
“The staff were always incredibly kind and approachable. I never felt there was any barrier between me and my lecturers, which made it easy to ask questions and seek clarification. This friendly environment meant every question I had was answered, which significantly boosted my confidence in my knowledge.
One of the best aspects of my experience was my personal tutor, who was always there when I needed support or guidance. Beyond the academic staff, the administrative team was equally wonderful, always ready to help and truly going above and beyond to assist in any situation. I feel so fortunate to have been surrounded by such genuinely kind and supportive people. There was never any judgment, only encouragement and kindness!”
How did your degree influence what you went onto next?
“I am currently a Research Technician in a microbiology group at the University of Bristol, working on fascinating pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium bovis and tuberculosis. The variety of projects I get to work on is truly exciting, ranging from monitoring tuberculosis cases in adorable badgers across England to investigating the toxicity levels of different S. aureus strains.
My degree provided me with an excellent foundation of knowledge, which made me feel well-prepared to take on the challenges of working in microbiology, even though my long-term goal is to become a Clinical Scientist in Immunology. The exposure to diverse opportunities and career paths throughout my studies was instrumental in helping me define my goals. The career support I received has been invaluable in shaping my journey and setting me on the right track for the future.”
What advice would you offer to any students contemplating a place at Bristol?
“Bristol is bursting with opportunities at every turn. You never know where life might lead, so make the most of every moment! Any work experience is valuable, and you might even discover a passion for fields you hadn’t originally considered.
Most importantly, never hesitate to ask for help. The University of Bristol is home to some of the kindest and most supportive people you’ll ever meet. Remember, you’re never alone on your academic journey!.”
