Types of repairs and issues we can help with
Staff can report a wide range of building and maintenance issues, including:
- heating or air‑conditioning not working
- damp or mould
- lights not working or flickering
- plumbing issues (leaks, blocked sinks/toilets, no hot water)
- doors, locks or access problems
- damaged furniture or fittings
- issues with walls, ceilings, floors or windows
- general building repairs or wear and tear
- health and safety concerns within University buildings.
If you are unsure which category your issue falls under, you should still report it. Our team will then allocate the job appropriately.
Urgent or emergency issues
For urgent maintenance issues, such as those affecting safety or causing serious disruption, contact our Help Desk or Security Services:
- Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 7 pm (excluding bank holidays and University closure days), call the Help Desk on 0117 928 9898.
- Outside of these hours, call Security Services 0117 928 7848. Details will be taken and a request will be registered on your behalf.
After an issue is reported
Once a member of staff has reported a non-emergency issue:
- the request is logged by the Help Desk
- the issue is reviewed and prioritised
- a job is scheduled based on urgency and safety
- you may be contacted if further information is needed.

If you live in University accommodation, the way you request a repair or maintenance will depend on where you live.
About our team
Maintenance Services is responsible for the upkeep, repair and safety of the University’s buildings and infrastructure. The team works to ensure spaces are safe, functional and fit for learning, teaching and research.
From routine maintenance and minor refurbishments to urgent repairs and statutory checks, we work behind the scenes to keep things working as they should. This means that staff and students can focus on what matters most.
Our in-house team includes skilled technicians, officers, and direct labour operatives, supported by trusted external contractors.
Together, we deliver:
- a planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programme across all campuses
- responsive repairs and emergency call-outs
- minor works and small refurbishments
- risk management and compliance with building safety regulations
- safe, reliable building systems and infrastructure.
