Reducing waste in UK food production with Dr. Lucy McCarthy

Press release issued: 11 June 2024

The UK food system is in crisis. Farmers are going out of business, 2 million tonnes of food never gets past the farm gate, meanwhile, 4.7 million families in the UK live in food poverty. The Circular Agriculture Hub was co-founded by Lucy McCarthy to bridge the gap between farmers and consumers, ensuring that surplus produce is able to reach potential users.

In this video, learn how Lucy was able to achieve far-reaching societal impact through her time on the ARC Accelerate program to work towards setting up a self-sustaining social enterprise.

About the Circ Agri Hub

The Circular Agriculture Hub is the vision of academics at the University of Bristol and University of Nottingham. The team has developed the concept of a digital hub which connects farmers and their unused produce quickly and easily with alternative consumers, including local markets, social supermarkets and foodbanks. The farmer is placed at the centre of the Hub design, providing a new commercial opportunity for farms to reclaim some of the estimated £1.8bn of lost value annually from unused farm produce and providing vital and affordable food to local communities.
