Student Sustainability Advocates
Student Sustainability Advocates are paid student staff working on embedding sustainability in the curriculum and academic experience.
This work started with the Sustainability Champions Program hosted by Bristol SU from 2021-2025. After this closed, the ESD Team launched the Sustainability Advocate Program for the 25-26 academic year. Across both schemes 65 students have been employed between 2021-2026, representing 26 departments.
Students have worked on a wide-range of influential projects including:
- Gathering student feedback and opinions on curriculum content to feed into the undergraduate ESD review process
- Co-creating new curriculum content and case studies alongside academic staff
- Organising department specific Green careers events with external speakers in Humanities, Life Sciences and Social Policy.
- Hosting wellbeing events to support students with Climate Anxiety
- Facilitating collaborative Climate Fresk climate education workshops for staff and students
- Working on sustainability related accreditations including the Planetary Health Report Card for which the Medical School came 2nd in the world in 2024-25: An Earth Day success – BMS Sustainability Blog
- Researching alumni outcomes in sustainable careers to better understand how we can support current students with their future career paths
Introducing Your 2025-26 Sustainability Advocates:

Why did you choose your course?
I chose this course for its unique blend of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, and Data Science, offering an integrated and multidisciplinary approach that truly excites me. Through this course, I have developed a strong appreciation for how these fields are brought together through cohesive, hands-on projects, which has equipped me with the skills and perspective needed to become an engineer.
Why did you apply to be a Sustainability Advocate? What change or impact do you hope to create?
I applied to be a Sustainability Champion because I am passionate about being a change maker, and this role would enable me to work closely and consult directly with influential figures of the faculty. The impact I hope to create is to establish a foundation where students develop a mindset that prioritizes environmental and ethical considerations in every solution that they develop as an engineer.
What other interests do you have?
Beyond my academic and professional pursuits, I have a strong interest in politics, geopolitics, history and culture, enjoying the study of each country’s unique narrative and identity. My hobbies include backpacking and traveling, which allow me to fully immerse myself in different cultures by conversing with locals, trying authentic local food, and spending hours in local museums. Besides that, I also really enjoy food tasting and cooking.

Why did you choose your course?
I really love being able to study such a breadth of different cultures, events and movements. As a subject it is so applicable to current affairs, nothing interests me more than being able to understand the roots of contemporary issues.
Why did you apply to be a Sustainability Advocate? What change or impact do you hope to create?
I applied to be a Sustainability Advocate because my studies have shown me how essential environmental perspectives are for understanding power, injustice and evolving human-nature relationships. Environmental history highlights that the environment itself has agency, and this lens can reshape how we address contemporary issues like colonial extraction and industrialisation. Historians can use storytelling and critical context to counter misinformation, highlight the roots of environmental injustice, and rebuild more sustainable relationships with the natural world. In this role, I want to strengthen history’s presence in the sustainability space through curriculum engagement and more sustainability-focused events and talks.
What other interests do you have?
I am the President of the History Society which I absolutely love. When I'm not studying, working or doing society work - I like to read, paint and bake for my flatmates.

Why did you choose your course?
I am drawn to the intricate interactions and balance that create, sustain and optimize life on Earth. Biomed is a broad choice that encompasses many of those interactions with regards to human health.
Why did you apply to be a Sustainability Advocate? What change or impact do you hope to create?
As someone from a small island developing state who absolutely loves all things nature, I have always been made very aware of the impacts of climate change on the world around us. Knowing that, in this position I would be able to help be a part of the solution, was something I simply could not pass up. During this year I am so excited to learn and understand more about our impact as a society and especially as scientists. I hope to encourage fellow students to be curious, creative and problem solving, engaging with their courses from a re-inspired, more sustainable viewpoint.
What other interests do you have?
Having completed up to grade 8 ballet and teaching tap for three years alongside doing hip- hop, jazz and contemporary, I have been an avid dancer since age 4. This year I am on the Advanced Tap and Advanced Contemporary and Salsa Dance competition teams for the university. I am also on the Equality and Wellbeing officer for Caribbean Society and Social Secretary for The Salsa society. I also really enjoy art and creative writing, especially when outdoors in nature. I am so grateful for opportunities to engage in UoB student groups and build friendships within the communities that mean the most to me.

Why did you choose your course?
I find the organic chemistry taught in the course the most interesting.
Why did you apply to be a Sustainability Advocate? What change or impact do you hope to create?
I applied to be a Sustainability Advocate to better understand and improve how students within chemistry experience sustainability. I am interested in how Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and sustainable laboratory practices can be made more visible, practical, and engaging for students.
What other interests do you have?
I enjoy playing the guitar with friends and reading.

Why did you choose your course?
My experience in the private equity sector has deepened my understanding of the importance of effective management and leadership. To further enhance my team's leadership skills, I am seeking systematic training in these areas. Simultaneously, I hope to build a more systematic and comprehensive knowledge base in finance and investment. This project will help me combine practical experience with a solid theoretical foundation.
Why did you apply to be a Sustainability Advocate? What change or impact do you hope to create?
I applied to be a Sustainability Advocate because I want to make sustainability part of everyday action rather than an abstract concept. I am particularly interested in how individual behavior and organizational practices can drive measurable change.
At the same time, I believe universities, especially business schools, are key in shaping future leaders, making this an important stage to embed sustainability into education and values. Through this role, I hope to promote practical awareness, encourage consistent small changes, and help build a culture where sustainability is part of daily decision-making.
What other interests do you have?
My main personal interest is hiking, as it allows me to spend time in nature and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Being outdoors also helps me appreciate the natural environment and its value. As an international student, I joined the Chinese Students’ Association because I hope to help others experience different cultures and gain a better understanding of diverse perspectives. I enjoy contributing to activities that encourage cultural exchange and create connections among students from different backgrounds.

Why did you choose your course?
I chose Biology as a degree where I could not only learn about the solutions to the climate crisis, but also connect to the natural world through fieldwork. I am particularly interested in rewilding and ecological regeneration - it is a real source of hope for me in an often bleak field of environmental destruction, and shapes my advocacy for plant-based food to reduce land use and spare more land for natural regeneration.
Why did you apply to be a Sustainability Advocate? What change or impact do you hope to create?
I shape everything around how I can make the most positive impact for people and planet. I saw the sustainability advocate role as a powerful position to work for climate and social justice at the University. As a tutor and education researcher, I am particularly interested in curricular change, and how we prepare the next generation of academics, teachers, professionals and businesspeople to have sustainability at the centre of their mind in all decision-making.
What other interests do you have?
I'm engaged in community organising for environmental and social justice campaigns, including Plant Based Universities, Bristol Young Greens, and Rethinking Economics. I am a flautist focusing on Baroque music, having previously led the university's Baroque ensemble. I am also active in the Quiz Society, having represented Bristol on this year's University Challenge series.
Why did you choose your course?
I've always loved learning about other cultures and learning another language was always the best way to do this thoroughly.
Why did you apply to be a Sustainability Advocate? What change or impact do you hope to create?
I applied to be a Sustainability Advocate for a few reasons: I'd always been involved in grassroots sustainability movements like Friday's for Future in secondary school and sixth form and wanted to get involved again at university, I always enjoyed the sustainability content we got taught in classes and wanted to push through the message further and I think that Arts subjects deserve just as much emphasis on sustainability in teaching as STEM subjects get.
What other interests do you have?
I'm editor-in-chief of Pensador magazine, Bristol's Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan language magazine, I'm also course rep and I have a radio show on Burst Radio station. I quite a keen runner and as a proud Manc I enjoy any music from the Madchester era.

Why did you choose your course?
I chose MSc Management (International Business) because I’m fascinated by how businesses shape the world we live in. I want to understand how organisations grow across borders, make complex decisions, and balance profit with responsibility. I’m especially interested in how global businesses can drive sustainable change. Markets don’t operate in isolation. They affect communities, environments, and people’s everyday lives. I want to learn how to lead in a way that recognises that responsibility. This course gives me the tools to think strategically, act globally and create long-term value.
Why did you apply to be a Sustainability Advocate? What change or impact do you hope to create?
I believe small, consistent shifts create real change. The way we consume. The way we travel. The way we design systems. I want to help make sustainable choices feel accessible, not overwhelming.
I hope to create spaces where people feel informed, not judged. Curious, not pressured. I want to encourage practical action and long-term thinking across our university community.
If we shift mindsets here, we influence the decisions people carry into their careers and industries. That ripple effect matters to me.
What other interests do you have?
Dance has been part of my life for years. I started teaching at 15 and it is still something I come back to. I spend a lot of time at the gym and I love reading. A lot of my energy goes into social impact. I have worked in education and community spaces, and I am drawn to work that creates more equity and access. I am also a student ambassador and mentor at UoB.
