From May 2026, the way we communicate with you regarding Children of the Children of the 90s (COCOs) questionnaires and clinics will change: the original 'Children of the 90s' (our G1s) will be the main contact for all correspondence relating to COCOs - whether that be the mother or father.
What you need to know
We will be inviting every G1 parent to every parent-child (COCOs) clinic visit. These visits take place when the child is: 6 months, 12 months, 3.5 years, 5 years, 7 years, 9 years and 11 years. The G1 partner (mum or dad) can attend but their data will not be collected - partner data will now only be collected once at the antenatal visit.
All correspondence relating to COCOs will now only be sent to the G1 parent - this is for both the clinic invitations and questionnaires.
Height, weight, blood pressure and cognitive measures are usually taken at each COCOs visit. You'll also be asked if you’re happy to provide blood and urine samples - and a bone density scan (DXA) when you bring your child to their 12-month visit.
You can take part in as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.
The COCOs visit for both the G1 parent and child will last up to 2 hours.
We only collect G1 parent information during COCOs visits, so it’s not possible to come separately. However, we’ll always do our best to rearrange appointments at a time that works for you.
Yes, a partner or grandparent can bring your child if needed. We’ll just ask for consent on the day.
The COCOs questionnaire and clinic invitation will be sent out (to G1 parents only) in two separate emails in advance of the visit - the COCOs questionnaire is in addition to the annual G1 questionnaire.
G1 partners will no longer receive emails regarding COCOs clinic visits or questionnaires (unless they are also an original participant).
In addition to the clinic visits, we may invite G1 parents to complete some activities at home such as wearing an activity monitor and completing a food diary. G1 parents may also be asked to carry out some activities to understand how children are learning and developing.
Additional Information
The G1 parent will receive a £10 shopping gift voucher for attending each clinic. The child will receive a choice of gift up to the age of 3.5 years - from 5 years they will receive a £10 shopping voucher. G1 parents will also receive a £10 voucher for completing the COCOs questionnaire.
