October 2025
The October APPAP meeting was well attended with 13 out of 15 members participating. There were three main topics under discussion.
The group met to discuss new research studies and key updates. After approving previous minutes, members considered whether visitors from the House of Commons Library could view the meeting recording, with no objections raised. Ther House of Commons team are keen to see how these kinds of participant panels operate. They then heard about three research projects.
The first study focuses on how genetic differences may affect the body’s response to a common skin virus linked to a rare cancer. This involves testing stored blood samples and inviting a small number of participants to provide additional blood and a small skin biopsy. Members discussed participant safety, the way information about the virus is communicated, and whether the proposed £45 reimbursement is sufficient.
The second study aims to explore menstrual health by combining questionnaire data, wearable device information, and menstrual fluid samples over three cycles. The goal is to better understand how menstrual cycles relate to wellbeing and health. Members offered feedback on incentives, engagement strategies, and making participation as easy and appealing as possible.
The third project will investigate experiences of digital maternity care, focusing on how new NHS apps are used and whether they create or reduce inequalities. Members emphasised the importance of accessibility and realistic time commitments for participants.
Finally, the group reviewed a draft cybersecurity message to reassure participants their data remains secure.
The next meeting will take place in December 2025.
