Which type?

TrialNet Studies are focusing on type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes

  • Also known as insulin dependent diabetes (IDDM) or juvenile diabetes
  • Usually develops before the age of 30 and requires insulin treatment immediately
  • Autoimmune condition which destroys the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin

Type 2 Diabetes

  • Also known as non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes
  • Usually occurs over the age of 30 and is controlled by diet and medication or diet and insulin
  • Condition in which resistance to insulin develops leaving the pancreas unable to produce enough insulin to compensate
