Vice-Chancellor's Impact Award
We are pleased to again include the Vice-Chancellor’s Impact Award as part of the New Enterprise Competition 2012. Two awards will be made this year, a winner’s prize of £1500 and a runner-up prize of £500 to individuals or groups showing outstanding innovation in creating economic and/or social impact from their research. The Vice-Chancellor's Impact Award is sponsored by IP Group
Selection process
- Individuals or groups can apply for the awards, as can Deans of Faculty, Heads of School, Research Directors, Impact Directors and RED staff on behalf of (and with the tacit agreement of the researchers). This will be done using the VC's Impact Award Form
- The Impact Working Group will short-list up to five applicants to go forward for final consideration by the Vice Chancellor.
Process for Award
- Applicants should complete the application form stating how they meet the criteria for the award. The statement should be evaluative and refer to evidence to support their case. The form should be sent to John.Halliwell@bristol.ac.uk in RED by April 5th 2012 at 5pm.
- The selection process will consider the applications in relation to the criteria. Applicants will be informed by email of whether their ideas have been short-listed for the Vice-Chancellors’ decision.
- Awards will be presented later in the year. The winners will be invited to attend the annual Enterprise Dinner on June 26th 2012 where the final awards announcement will be made.
Further Information
Applications are invited from any area of innovative research impact:
- Innovative research which could include the involvement of different organisations in the research, development, or commercialisation process.
- Innovative partnerships with external organisations including industry and public or third sector groups that create impact for all participants.
Vice Chancellor’s Impact Award Criteria
Applications should demonstrate:
- That the research made a distinct contribution to the impact.
- The development of economic or social value within a wider audience of individuals and/or organisations.
- Significant, measurable effect on target audience/partners.
Applications will also be graded against:
- Depth and breadth of impact.
- Involvement of partner individuals or organisations.
- Innovation in deriving economic or social value from research.
- Sustainability/embedding in practice.
Definition of Impact
The impact of research is not easily defined and for the purposes of this Award we will use the RCUK definition. RCUK defines Impact as the contribution that research makes to society and the economy. Impact embraces all the diverse ways in which research knowledge and skills can benefit individuals and organisations by:
- Enhancing quality of life, health and creative output.
- Increasing the effectiveness of policy-making and of public services.
- Fostering global economic performance, and the economic competitiveness of the UK.
