Composition and Recording Studios

The Composition and Recording Studios are the hub of a thriving and growing activity in studio composition, ranging from taught undergraduate units to research, and from acousmatic composition to film soundtracks to interactive performance. The Studios are directed by Neal Farwell and managed by Jonathan Scott.

The studio suite was purpose-built as a recording and composition facility. Studio 1, Studio 2 and the Live Room have controlled internal acoustics and complete isolation from the outside world, and the whole studio suite has custom low-noise air conditioning. Studios 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are based on high-end Apple computers with a wide range of shared software, and with additional hardware specialised for different purposes.

Flexible working is encouraged between the different studio rooms so that different users interact. A separate suite of Pro Tools LE workstations is provided for the 1st-year undergraduate unit in Studio Composition.

The Studios host a regular electroacoustic concert series under the title Sonic Voyages. Special events have included staging the composition strand of the 2007 Royal Musical Association Research Students' Conference, and an international call for electroacoustic video works. Recent featured guests include Jonty Harrison, Adrian Moore, and Kjartan Olafsson.
