Q&A: The Library - Expanding Services

Wills Memorial Library

Press release issued: 9 February 2016

Naomi Nile is the Subject Librarian for law. In this interview, student Joseph Shaw finds out everything from new funding, plans for e-books and 24 hour access, to future plans for expanding Library Services.

Q: With the University and Law School expanding, how is the Library planning to cope with the increasing demand for core texts?
A: The Library is working in partnership with the Law School and has allocated additional book funds to specifically target Law subject areas. The Law School has also received a donation from Alumni to purchase additional copies of your core texts. This donation is being spread over the next three years and will, we feel, have a very positive impact on the library resources available to you.

Q: Are there any plans to improve access to online materials?
We are continually reviewing our online offering - both in terms of how it is accessed and the resources we are providing. The library has recently invested in some e-books, including Oxford Handbooks for Law Online, which will significantly increase our online offering for law students. In terms of access to these resources, we are currently updating our webpages and looking to simplifying off-campus access.

A: The University has already made efforts to increase the amount of study space available. What are its further plans to cater for a growing student population?
A: The Grace Reeves Study centre has just opened and Beacon House will be opening in April 2016. This new student hub will be providing at least 350 additional study spaces. There are also plans to increase the study spaces available in the Arts and Social Sciences Library by opening up space on the ground floor which is currently used as staff offices.

Q: Is the library planning on expanding its 24 hour facilities?
A: We continually review the opening hours across all our libraries and study spaces. The Senate House Study Centre, which is provided by the Library, is now open 24/7, all year round. The Wills Memorial Library will be extending its opening hours during your revision and assessment periods and ASSL will be opening 24/7 during these times.

Q: I can't find an important book I need for my essay, what should I do?
A: Firstly, don’t panic! If all of the Library copies have been borrowed by other students, place a reservation using your Library account. You will then be emailed as soon as the book is returned to the library. Your reservation will also alert library staff that the book is in demand so we can see if more copies are needed, or make it available in the short loan collection. If we don’t seem to have the book at all, you can:

  • use our online purchase recommendation form (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/library/library/resources/recommend/purchase.html)
  • email us at lib-wills@bristol.ac.uk
  • visit us in the Wills Memorial Library

We will then look at ordering a copy for the library or recommend that you put in a request for an inter-library loan. If you are struggling to find or get access to something you need, the important thing is to get in touch.
