Biography

Stuart is a Teaching Fellow at the Centre for Ethics in Medicine. Stuart has a BA (Hons) in History and Philosophy (Keele), an MA in Medical Ethics and Law (Keele), and a PhD in Ethics (Keele University). The subject of Stuart’s doctoral thesis was an examination of child centred moral objections to the practice of commercial surrogate motherhood.

 

Prior to joining the Centre for Ethics in Medicine Stuart held a Teaching Fellowship at the Centre for Professional Ethics, Keele University.    

 

Teaching and Professional Training Activities

Stuart has leadership roles in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. In the undergraduate MBChB, he is Element Lead for Ethics in Year 3 and also involved in years 1 & 2. He also teaches and supervises students on the Centre’s BSc in Bioethics. At Postgraduate level Stuart is Programme Director of the Certificate and MSc in Health Care Ethics and Law and also coordinates a number of Units on this course. Finally, Stuart is also second supervisor for one PhD project.  

NOTE: Stuart will be covering Dr Ainsley Newson’s teaching duties while she is away on leave.

Research Interests

Stuart’s research interests lie primarily in applied ethics (broadly construed) with a particular focus on biomedical ethics.

 

To date Stuart’s research interests have focused on three (often inter-related) themes, these being: reproductive ethics, the ethics of emerging and/or innovative uses of technology, and the ethics of therapeutic and non-therapeutic bodily modification.
