Expressing and Breastfeeding

Lots of support is available for mums who breastfeed, both whilst on maternity leave and on their return to work or studies, as well as for partners of breastfeeding mums. If you want to carry on breastfeeding when you return to work or studies, there's no reason to stop - most mums are able to find a solution which works for them. Some express while away from their child, others mix feed - there are lots of options open to you. Within the University, as part of the Maternity Connections scheme, there are two breastfeeding experts who are happy to answer questions and offer support regarding breastfeeding, including around your return to work.

There is also a National Breastfeeding Helpline which is staffed by volunteer breastfeeding counsellors who can provide independent, confidential, non-judgmental breastfeeding support and information. It is open from 9.30am until 9.30pm every day on 0300 100 0212.

Facilities

Members of staff and students who are breastfeeding and/or need to express may need access to private and hygienic facilities. For information on existing facilities and to make arrangements where provision doesn't currently exist please contact Facilities Management and your School Manager. You can also contact the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team if there are any issues.

Nursing mothers and their managers should follow the Safety and Health Office's New and Expectant Mothers at Work Guidance and complete any associated risk assessments.
