Language training for PGRs

Applications for the University-Wide Language Programme (UWLP) 2023-24 for PGRs are now closed.

The Bristol Doctoral College works with the School of Modern Languages to offer this opportunity for a limited number of PGR students to study a language unit.

Applications open in the summer for the following academic year.

You can apply if you meet the following:

  • You can commit to up to 3 hrs weekly contact time as well as 4-6 hours per week of private study
  • You take all associated tests and examinations for the course

  • You have your Supervisor’s and Head of School's approval
  • Your School can confirm that the £300 course cost will be covered by either a training budget, external project funding, bench fees or tuition fees and provide a contact for making this payment (e.g. an administrator in the School Office)
  • The language is an essential need for your research. For example you may be:
    • Engaging with non-English texts and resources
    • Working in collaboration with overseas researchers
    • Intending to travel abroad for your research

Further details about what UWLP is and the language courses available can be found in the online handbook. Please note, this is primarily a programme for undergraduate students so the handbook information about enrollment, registration and credit points is not applicable to PGR students. Upon completion of the language course you will be able to get a certificate confirming the level of language training achieved.

UWLP is competitive so please ensure you complete all of the steps required and give as much relevant information as you can.

This process for PGRs is managed by the Bristol Doctoral College. Applications submitted separately to the School of Modern Languages will not be accepted.
