Helene Jones (2012 cohort)

Helene JonesPlease provide a brief summary of your PhD project.

My research was trying to understand and improve the composites design process. I researched methods to capture the tacit knowledge that is integral to the manual production route for composites products. I then designed solutions that facilitated communication at the interface between design and production.

Did you choose to continue your XP project as a PhD? Why or why not?

I initially chose not to continue my XP project as a PhD. However, as the research progressed an opportunity arose for me to develop the outcomes of my XP and formed part of my PhD research.

How did the taught component benefit your PhD research?

It benefitted my research because it introduced me to a wide range of different researchers, academics and subjects, so at different points during my PhD I knew people to talk to or collaborate with.

How did the cohort structure benefit your PhD research?

The cohort structure provided a friendship group throughout and beyond my research.

What did you most value about being part of a CDT?

With the CDT I valued that my funding wasn't directly attached to a project, and that I could work with my supervisors to shape the research.

What was the 'impact' of your research?

Through my research I worked with laminators (the person who makes composite products) to design a hand tool that can be used in the production of composites products and in the training of the laminators.

What was your destination on leaving the CDT?

A technology graduate at Yoox Net-a-Porter, and I am now working as an Associate Developer for the same company.

What are your main responsibilities?

Currently I am in the fulfilment domain and I work in an agile team to develop software that supports the warehouse operations.

Where do you see yourself in five to ten years' time?

I am working that out :)

How have the skills and knowledge you acquired during your time in the CDT helped develop your career?

I feel comfortable with ambiguous tasks and my ability to learn or collaborate to find a path through.
