Multiexpression Technologies

‌‌“Nearly every major process in a cell is carried out by assemblies of 10 or more protein molecules […]. Indeed, the entire cell can be viewed as a factory that contains an elaborate network of interlocking assembly lines, each of which is composed of a set of large protein machines.” Bruce Alberts, Former President of the National Academy of Sciences, USA, in Cell, 1998.

The Berger laboratory develops advanced technologies for multiprotein complex production and multigene transfer, for both prokaryotic and eukaryotic hosts. These include MultiBac, a third-generation baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS) for eukaryotic multiprotein complex production. MultiBac is the major platform operated by the Berger laboratory. It is installed in Bristol’s Wellcome Trust funded Eukaryotic Expression Facility (EEF) operated by the Berger group in the School of Biochemistry. MultiBac can be accessed by researchers from academia and industry. To date, more than 1000 laboratories world-wide have obtained MultiBac to accelerate their research.

Similar powerful systems have been developed in the Berger laboratory now also for multigene transfer into mammalian cells (MultiMam) and also for E.coli (MultiColi). All systems (MultiBac, MultiMam and MultiColi) provide the option for roboterised operation in high-throughput mode utilising the Berger Group’s proprietary ACEMBL pipeline (ACEMBL).
