Grants

Research grants (over £500)

Academic staff may apply for BIRTHA funding to support an event or project which is of a developmental or interdisciplinary nature, or aims to promote and/or enhance research networks.

Please note that applications for support for attending a conference or for individual research should be made to the faculty conference and research fund (UoB access only).

2016/17 deadlines are as follows:

  • Monday 17 October 2016
  • Monday 16 January 2017
  • Monday 15 May 2017.

Small grants (under £500)

The small grants scheme is light-touch and allows for a swift response. Requests for funds under £500 may be submitted at any time during the academic year, and will be considered by the BIRTHA Director who will usually be able to give a response within a few days. Please note all proposals must be over £100, anything under this amount should be referred to departments.

Funds need to be spent by the financial year end.

Please note that applications for support for attending a conference or for individual research should be made to the Faculty conference and research fund (UoB access only).

Applications deadline: none

In return

Successful applicants must acknowledge the support received by BIRTHA in all promotional and press activity in accordance with the guidelines on BIRTHA's visual identity. The organisers must:

  • give BIRTHA prominent mention in all promotional material and use the BIRTHA logo and the University logo;
  • seek outside finance where appropriate;
  • have a financial plan;
  • submit a final report of 100-400 words to BIRTHA within one month of the event(s) for the BIRTHA newsletter.

Eligibility

Both research grants and small grants are open to academic staff only (teaching fellows are not eligible to apply).

Across academic disciplines, women are significantly underrepresented compared to men as invited plenary speakers, as symposium speakers and/or panelists. BIRTHA wishes to fund conferences and events where the organisers have made efforts to obtain gender balance in speakers and participants. Single-gender panels will not be funded unless accompanied by evidence that extensive good-faith attempts to obtain gender balance were made. We wish to encourage all organisers to consider diversity in general when compiling their speaker invitations.
