University Hall is a self-catered residence situated near Durdham Downs, a leafy tranquil Bristol suburb.
It was built in 1971 on the Stoke Bishop site as the first self-catered hall and today accommodates a total of 301 students.
University Hall attracts students who value the independence of sharing a flat, catering and caring for themselves, within a close-knit community. The Hall has a team of seven senior residents who, together with the Warden and Deputy Warden, provide pastoral support.
University Hall is home to a dynamic and diverse community of students and we pride ourselves on the support we offer while also encouraging independence and community involvement. Our students say that “they value the location, the Hall’s proximity to others on the Stoke Bishop site and the fact that supermarkets, clubs and the uni are all (fairly) easily accessible.”
“Here at UH (University Hall) we support and encourage a unique Bristol experience where our students are surrounded with the freedom to enjoy themselves with other open-minded and enthusiastic people.”
The Junior Common Room (JCR) Committee organises a variety of sporting, social events and activities and, together with the Hall staff, aims to create a friendly atmosphere and welcomes those who would like to participate in any way. In recent years the Hall's sports teams have gone from strength to strength and are very well supported. Other hall activities centre around the common room where there is a bar, games area, satellite TV, pool, darts, Play Station and games machine. There is regular weekly entertainment such as quizzes, film nights and special themed nights in the bar.
The Hall also provides a music practice room and computer room. There is an annual formal black tie event to which all students are invited.
There is a choice of standard or en suite accommodation. Some flats may be allocated as single sex only, although the majority are mixed. Most of our students are accommodated in the six original houses, which contain a total of 55 flats. Each of these flats has five single study bedrooms (without washbasins) and share communal facilities (kitchen/diner, shower room and separate WC).
The eight flats in the cottage-style buildings, added in 1992, each accommodates six people. These study bedrooms have en suite facilities and there is a shared kitchen/diner in each flat. These different facilities are reflected in the fees.
All kitchens are well equipped with cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils, microwave and fridge/freezer. Smoking is not permitted in any of the flats or communal areas.
The site has a main administration block that also houses a study room, launderette and common room. Bicycle storage and car parking facilities are also available on site.
Whichever type of accommodation you choose our students say that “what really makes it for them is that University Hall is particularly friendly and sociable.”

‘A friendly and intimate environment that creates very strong friendships between flat-mates.’
‘I love University hall, you're immediately put with a group of people in your flat who become really good friends and the bar has a good atmosphere, not to mention very cheap drinks. I also think it is the best value for money out of all the halls.’
‘University Hall offers good value for money.’
