Introduction

Clifton Hill House is the only catered hall in the Clifton area. It is within easy walking distance from the academic departments, shops, cinemas and nightclubs!

Clifton Hill House dates from the 18th century and has been used as a hall of residence since the foundation of the University in 1909. New wings were added in 1960 and 1972, and the majority of students are now housed in these relatively modern buildings. The original gardens have been maintained and extended.

Living at Clifton Hill House

The pattern of life is friendly and informal and the Hall is run with a community spirit in mind. The student JCR committee organises a lively programme of social and cultural events and the sports teams are active and successful. Indoor facilities include a spacious common room, library, reception room, bar (with big screen video projector), television room, computer room and a launderette.

Music practice is available in the Symonds music room and also in the JCR. However, this facility is sometimes restricted when the Hall caters for day seminars and conferences.

The Hall has a well-established musical and amateur dramatics tradition with plays and concerts being performed throughout the year. Formal meals are organised regularly, when students are invited to join the Warden, senior residents and guests at High Table. Squash courts and one tennis court are available on site, and the University swimming pool and sports centre are within easy walking distance.

All study bedrooms and public areas, including the Junior Common Room (JCR), Club bar and the grounds, are strictly non-smoking.

Accommodation

The Hall accommodates 225 students. Most of the rooms are single (only four female shared rooms). 72 rooms in the newest wing have washbasins; elsewhere there are shared bathroom facilities on each floor. Most floors are mixed, but some single sex floors are available according to demand.
